The 5th JODI Regional Training Workshop for energy and oil statisticians takes place, hosted by Turkish Petroleum A.O. (TPAO).

The Ankara training workshop which featured expert speakers from IEF, APEC, EuroStat, IEA, OPEC, as well as UN ESCWA, addressed 37 officials in charge of energy and oil data collection from 12 different countries. It is one of a series presented by the IEF and its JODI partner organisations in an ongoing effort which advocates greater market transparency through promotion of JODI as a mechanism to improve the quality and timeliness of primary source data to the oil market.

JODI Workshops help to educate the national administrations that have a crucial role to play in the timely collection of data and that data’s timely release to JODI and the public. The Ankara JODI training workshop was opened by Mr. Yusuf Yazar, Deputy Undersecretary at the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources in Turkey. He applauded the joint effort put forth by JODI’s 7 partner organisations, and thanked the IEF for its coordination of JODI, expressing Turkey’s support for the initiative.

Noting the potential for JODI to contribute towards building capacity in developing countries to collect short term energy data, IEF Energy Director, Dr. Said Nachet welcomed the participation of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). Dr. Nachet emphasized the importance of transparency and exchange of data for market stability and brought to participants’ attention the high level political support that JODI enjoys, referencing both the G8 Aquila Summit in July 2009 and the G20 Summit of Leaders in Pittsburg in September 2009.

The Joint Oil Data Initiative, coordinated by the IEF with participation of APEC, EU, IEA, OLADE, OPEC and the UN, is a concrete outcome of the producer-consumer dialogue. Nearly 100 countries/economies, accounting for more than 90 % of global oil production and demand are covered by JODI World Database.
